Twitter now requires advertisers to pay for verification before running ads
After removing all the old blue checkmarks and asking individual users to pay for verification, Elon Musk-led Twitter on Friday asked advertisers to either pay for verification or they won’t be able to run their ads on the platform.
Social media consultant Matt Navarra shared a letter Twitter sent to advertisers, which says that starting April 21, “your account must have a verified checkmark or subscribe to either Twitter Blue or Verified Organizations to continue serving ads on Twitter.”
“Business accounts that spend more than $1,000 per month already have or will soon have Gold Checks and can continue to enjoy advertising uninterrupted at this time,” the company wrote.
The company said it is pursuing a broader verification strategy to improve the quality of Twitter content and improve the user and advertiser experience.
“This approach also supports our ongoing efforts to reduce fraudulent accounts and bots. By subscribing to either of these services, Twitter has verified that you are a real person and/or company,” the microblogging platform said.
Navarra tweeted: “Twitter is now telling advertisers that they MUST subscribe to Twitter Blue or Verified Organizations to continue serving ads!”
Twitter had asked companies to pay $1,000 a month to keep the gold badges, and brands and organizations that don’t pay will lose their badges.
The Musk-led company, which is busy monetizing its platform in various ways, also charges an extra $50 a month to add a token to each account associated with the brand, The Information recently reported.
Previously, all old verified accounts lost their blue badges, creating chaos on the platform all over the world. Several celebrities lost their blue checkmark.
